Classes

Lessons are one-to-one with highly qualified and experienced teachers.

They are held once a week for 20 or 30 minutes per lesson.

Our students can enter RIAM and RGT exams throughout the school year, which are held in the winter, spring and summer.

Students at Mullingar Music School are encouraged to sit music exams and progress through the grades. However, some students may just wish to learn for fun, improve their technique, develop their repertoire or indeed work towards auditions or competitions. All instruments except guitar are examined by the Royal Irish Academy of Music. These exams are held three times a year, and our local exam centre is always in Mullingar. Students may enter for exams through Mullingar Music School, however, if they have specific dates/times that are inconvenient (such as school exams, holidays, etc) they may apply directly to the Academy, as we cannot change exam dates/times once they have been issued. Forms are available in our office or you can apply online. Any students with special educational needs (e.g. Dyslexia), need to inform their teacher as a separate form needs to be filled in.

Summer camps are held during July and are suited for different age groups covering many different musical interests.

Our popular Introduction to Musical Instruments course is held once a week for nine week periods, designed to introduce 6 – 8 year olds to piano, violin, guitar and music theory.

They also learn proper technique and learn various styles of music such as classical, jazz, pop and modern. Students will need access to a piano/keyboard, as practice at home plays an important part. Beginners start off with a set of fun colourful books and progress to exams with RIAM or ABRSM.

Violin Lessons

Violin is an exciting and invigorating instrument to learn. Children can start from the age of six and from there it requires regular practice and determination. Students will need their own violin to practise on at home.

Learning how to play the violin enhances coordination, listening and sight skills. It can be learned for fun and as part of life long musical studies.

Students at Mullingar Music School have the option of learning solely for enjoyment if they wish. However, many students tend to progress through study under the Royal Irish Academy of Music examination program.

Lessons are tailored to the need of each individual student, and encouragement is a vital feature throughout every class.

Guitar Lessons

Ideally children should be 7 years or older as it can be physically challenging. Other factors to consider are the size of the child’s hand and their coordination.

Can adults take guitar lessons? Yes, we have many adult students who come from all musical backgrounds, many starting complete beginners. All lessons are one to one with the teacher, so they can be catered to each student's individual abilities and interest.

Every student needs access to their own guitar to practice at home. However, they can use one of our own school guitars for their first lesson to see which type of guitar and size would suit them best. The guitar teacher will be able to advise you on this.

We enter students for both the RGT and the Rock school exams. Exams are encouraged but students can learn for fun if they would prefer. Students can also be prepared for practical examinations for the Junior/Leaving Certificate.

A variety of styles will be taught eg. pop, rock, reggae, classical and blues.

Guitar lessons are available Monday – Saturday. Students may join mid-term subject to availability and will be charged according to how many weeks remain in the current term.
